“My paintings are about identity and mystery. The questions of who I am and where I am and how I am dealing with life, are forces that I know guide my hands as I paint. Exactly why I paint what I do, and in my certain style, is a puzzle to me. Like asking why you sing or speak in such a sound, or why you pronounce words in such a way, or why you move like you do. It’s all part of who we are and what we are: uncontrolled and intuitive, from a lifetime of collected habits. This is what becomes my painting. I cannot disassociate any of it from my thoughts or my gestures or my emotions. It is what I am. These are things done without preparation or thought, spontaneously. If we think a lot about doing these things, we become controlled and our efforts are forced. I don’t want to paint in a forced or controlled way. The ‘art’ comes from making an expression with ‘selective spontaneity’: where one can be free within the limits of language!”
